⭐ ST. JOHN’S CHILDCARE PROGRAM

A multicultural, Non-Denominational Infant and Toddler Program

In 1971 St. John’s created a committee to set up a program of before school care, including breakfast. In addition to Emerson, John Muir and Le Conte Schools were surveyed. With Session approval and $1,200 seed money, a director/lead teacher was employed. With volunteer help and two work-recreation students, the program began with an enrollment of 16 children. The St. John’s 1976 annual report notes that a Child Care Board, which included members of St. John’s as well as parents, and community representatives, was overseeing the program. In that same year an infant care program was begun with funds from the State.

We specialize in the care of infants and toddlers from the age of three months to three years. Our educated, caring teachers provide individualized care within the group setting. We experience very little staff turnover. Our daily activities are developmentally appropriate and play-based. We celebrate the diversity of our families and staff by encouraging respect and acceptance for all people. St. John’s ChildCare Program is a non-profit agency, governed by a board of directors. Our Board of Directors is comprised of parents, community members and St. John’s church members.

High Quality Care

We offer the highest quality of care with educated teachers and very low staff turnover. Our three classrooms provide developmentally appropriate activities, with a mix of child- and teacher-directed activities. Our curriculum is developmentally appropriate, play-based and includes large and small motor opportunities, art and sensory experiences, language development, music and movement, and pre-literacy exposure through books, finger plays and storytelling

Nutritious Meals and Snacks

St. John’s Childcare participates in the Federal Child Care Food Program, which ensures that all of our meals are healthy, nutritiously balanced, and served in appropriate, child-sized portions. Each day our experienced cook prepares breakfast, lunch and two snacks for all the children in the program at no additional cost to parents. We also provide cereals, pureed baby food and some brands of formula.

A Place for Families

St. John’s ChildCare recognizes family as the most important factor in a child’s life. We have an “open door” policy: parents are always welcome and encouraged to be a part of our program. Parents of St. John’s are required to participate monthly (2 hours/ month/ enrolled child) in center activities.
